As I walked through the streets of Spain, I saw Spanish flags hanging from balconies, stores, and windows all over. It was amazing to see the national pride portrayed throughout the country. One thing that I was perplexed by was the black ribbon attached to some, but not all of the flags. Some were in the shape of the Sevilla symbol which is similar to the number eight, while others were shaped like the ribbons we see for spreading breast cancer awareness. When I visited my host mother in Córdoba, I asked her about it. The answer shocked me and had me in despair. It turns out that the black ribbon is a symbol of remembrance and mourning and in this case specifically for those who passed away from COVID-19. So, if a family member passed away due to COVID-19, a black ribbon was placed on the Spanish flag a way of raising awareness for the quantity and to mourn the people who were lost due to this heinous, infectious disease.
