On October 12th of every year, Spain celebrates Hispanic Day or National Day (Fiesta Nacional de España) where everyone in the country has school and work off, except for some restaurants and bars that stay open. Banks, phone shops, clothing stores, etc. typically close.

This holiday has multiple layers and significance. It commemorates when Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas in 1492. In the United States, on the other hand, this day is now known as Indigenous People's Day which commemorates Native American's culture and histories as opposed to praising Columbus. On the other hand, this day is also known as Day of the Virgin of El Pilar. She was given this name because the Virgin Mary appeared to the Apostle James miraculously on top of a pillar while he was preaching in Spain in 40 A.D.
